Teaching Linear Equation for the primary school’s pupils?

A few months ago, one of my friend asked about that. He has a private-lesson student who will participate to a mathematics’ Olympiad. When he accompanied his student in order to try several previous Olympiad problems, he got a difficulty to guide his student to solve a linear equation system related problem.

Why?

Because his student still in third grade or fourth) of elementary school.
My friend tried to explain about what it is mean by linear equation to his student. But it seem too early and no wonder his student get stuck when my friend call for variable and many notion on linear equation materials.

Do you have similar experience?

Well, several weeks ago I got a problem solving lesson from Dr. Yusuf Hartono, in which we discuss about this condition.

Here is the problem given by my lecturer:

At the time, ten of us (my classmate and I) spontaneously use the elimination and substitution method to solve the question.

My lecturer laughed. “I will show you a very interesting method”, he said.

Later on I found that his method is “making a visual representation”.

  • Since both of chickens and rabbits have one tail, so the total of those are 32 species. Then, 32 circles are drawn as the representation of its bodies.

  • Since both of chickens and rabbits have minimum two feet, then every circle get two lines as the representation of its feet.

  • Count the feet that have been use and compare it with the total feet which is available. The remainder of the feet will be add in a pair to the circle, so that there are some circle which have four feet.

  • Count the circle which have two lines, it is the representative the number of chicken.
  • Count the circle which have two lines, it is the representative the number of rabbit.

Well,
What do you think about this method?
I hope it can help your students to solve a linear system equation related problem, even though they not learn yet about the formal definition of linear equation :)
